We Survived, Sort Of
Mar. 3rd, 2021 11:25 pmJoe Biden is now President. There was an attempted coup on January 6, 2021. Republicans are still being assholes, but people are getting vaccinated. Texas decided to rescind its mask mandate thus endangering getting the pandemic under control. Texas had a huge self-inflicted disaster. They refused to winterize their power grid. It's mostly isolated from the US grids. So not only did Texans lose power, they lost gas and water too. Many people died because of their attitudes towards regulations. Hence rescinding the mask mandate to distract from the freeze.
Anyway, there are now more infectious variants of SARS-CoV-2 spreading in the US and now it's a race against time to vaccinate as many people as possible to head them off. We won't know for at least two months if the end of the pandemic is in sight. I hope to get vaccinated within the next few weeks, but I'm still not eligible. I was hoping we'd get to travel abroad in 2022. That seems less likely now. Not even sure if 2023 is a possibility.
Those who want to end pandemic restrictions are the reason why they won't end because they flout them and continue the massive infection rate. Some countries have the disease under control. We don't. And because many countries don't we have given the virus millions of more opportunities to evolve. Some viruses become more infectious but less deadlier over time. Well, this one is becoming more infectious but not less deadly. And because it is more infectious, a lot more people are going to die even though it's not deadlier. It's just simple exponential growth.
